Sheep For Sale

All our South Glynde Babydoll sheep are registered with ASSBA which means that anyone buying our pure-bred sheep can be reassured of their provenance and  that our rams are Accredited Ovine Brucellosis-free. Our lambs are born in late winter and weaned in early summer which is when our young wethers and lambs are available for sale and collection.

We do not sell lambs prior to being weaned from their mothers. If you are purchasing mature ewes and rams for breeding, keep in mind that Babydoll ewes are seasonal breeders i.e. they will only get in lamb in autumn and early winter. We advise, wherever possible, purchasing several months ahead of mating so sheep are settled into their new home.  All South Glynde Babydoll sheep come with health certificates and pedigrees where required.

Wethers

Babydoll wethers* are ideally suited as companion livestock and for anyone wanting sheep but not wanting to manage a breeding flock or who are new to keeping sheep.

They are placid and easy to manage for young families and for someone wanting sheep but not wanting to manage a breeding flock.

Our South Glynde Babydoll wethers are also sold regularly vineyard owners looking for more sustainable mid-row management.

Wethers are available from 10-12 weeks of age after weaning.

*Wether is the term given to a male sheep castrated before sexual maturity. In our South Glynde stud, this procedure is undertaken under pain management at 4-8 weeks. Most male progeny in the Australian sheep industry are wethers.

Rams

The strictest criteria is used to determine which male lambs we grow out as rams. The lambs are inspected at 4-6 weeks by an independent sheep “classer” who is looking for strong, healthy sheep that fit the breed description and stand square on well-formed feet. Essential for rams to be of the highest quality.

We work with our long-term clients to ensure bloodlines are refreshed and to select rams most suited to their breeding objectives. And we are happy to check bloodline suitability for any new clients.

Our Babydoll rams are most often purchased at one-and-a-half to two years of age which is the most common age a ram starts working. However, we are sometimes asked for rams six-nine months old which can be mated with ewes if they have gained enough weight ie they weigh two-thirds of their final bodyweight. CHECK. We also release older stud rams for purchase.

Pedigrees can be provided.

Ewes

We’re thrilled at last to be able to offer a range of ewes for sale.

The scarcity of Babydolls meant that for many years, we needed to retain all our ewes for our own breeding program. Now we have a self-replacing flock, we can offer both maidens (ewes that have not yet lambed) and older ewes who have been used in our stud.

Pedigrees can be provided.

Ewes in lamb

By special arrangement, we can provide mated ewes which have been scanned in lamb.

Wanting to start your own babydoll flock?

Increasingly we are being asked if we can supply a small Babydoll flock ie a ram with several ewes, usually five or six, for owners wanting the joy of raising their own lambs.

Yes, we can. And we loved working on this with clients. We put together a Babydoll flock ready for mating which means taking all the hard work out of making sure the bloodlines and pedigrees are compatible.

All going well, there will be no need for a new ram for two years, which is when any ewe lambs born in year one are ready to mate. At that stage, we can provide a new ram with different bloodlines.
